Major Asian stock markets finished mixed Thursday. US economic data rattled Japan's investors, but growth optimism lifted China's index. The Nikkei Stock Average dropped 0.6% in Tokyo, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 eased 0.1%. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.2%, but Taiwan's Taiex rose 0.2% and India's Sensex gained 0.2%. Tokyo-based Panasonic fell nearly 8% as the company said it would offer 818.4 billion yen ($9.37 billion) to buy shares in Sanyo Electric that it doesn't already own. JVC Kenwood dropped 10.6% after the company reported a quarterly loss. China's Shanghai Composite rose 0.6%, on back of a 2.3% surge Wednesday and its eighth advance in nine sessions. Wednesday's jump followed central bank comments that there is little scope for a double dip in the economy. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index ended flat; it too had climbed over seven straight days. Brokerage shares were leading gains in an overall advance for the financial sector. Citic Securities were up 2.4%, while China Merchants Securities gained 1.5%. Hong Kong-listed Agricultural Bank of China slipped 0.3%, a dip attributed to profit-taking despite news the bank had raised an additional HK$12.20 billion from exercising the over-allotment option of its Hong Kong initial public offering. The stock had rallied 11.5% in the past six sessions. In Sydney, banking weakness, following declines for Wall Street, outweighed gains for resource shares.
